Jane was of distinguished ancestry, being a descendent of the French Huguenot, Burgon Broucard, who married Catherine LeFebre. the Brokaws cam to America via Holland about 1675, and their daughter married Van Brett, of what family is not discovered, but they had wealth and high position in the early days of New York.
